My First Visits to Bixby Bridge
Long before social media, GPS navigation, and smartphone cameras, I found myself making regular drives down California's Highway 1 in my 1963 Ford Falcon convertible.
Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Big Sur coastline became one of my favorite escapes from the pace of Silicon Valley. The destination was often Bixby Bridge, but the drive itself was always part of the experience. Highway 1 winds through some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in North America, with every turn revealing dramatic cliffs, crashing surf, and sweeping Pacific views.
Many people imagine California's coastline as warm and sunny year-round. The reality can be quite different. Even on clear days, the marine air along Big Sur can be surprisingly cold, especially in the early morning hours when photographers are chasing the best light. Driving a convertible along the coast before sunrise often meant arriving bundled in layers while fog drifted across the hills and ocean below.
The first time I photographed Bixby Bridge in Big Sur was more than thirty years ago with my Nikon SLR film camera. At the time, the bridge was already one of California's most recognizable landmarks, but it felt quieter and far less crowded than it does today. Some mornings I would arrive before dawn and spend hours waiting for the fog to shift or the first sunlight to reach the cliffs.

The Challenge of Photographing Bixby Bridge
Many visitors assume photographing Bixby Bridge is easy.
Pull into the turnout, take a picture, and continue south.
Creating a fine art photograph is another matter entirely.
The most important ingredient is timing.
Fog can completely hide the bridge or transform it into something magical. Coastal winds frequently shake tripods and create challenging shooting conditions. Light changes quickly as the sun moves across the canyon, often creating brief windows when the landscape feels perfectly balanced.
One of my favorite seasons is spring.
When conditions align, wildflowers add color and texture to the foreground while the surrounding hills remain lush and green from winter rains. These fleeting moments can dramatically change the mood of the photograph.
Patience becomes the most valuable piece of equipment.
Some of my favorite images were created after waiting hours for fog to shift or clouds to break at exactly the right moment.
The camera simply records what nature provides.
Looking Beyond the Famous Overlook
Most photographs of Bixby Bridge are made from the same viewpoint.
There's a reason for that. It's spectacular.
But after decades of photographing the area, I've learned that some of the most rewarding compositions come from looking beyond the obvious.
Sometimes that means incorporating foreground elements such as wildflowers, coastal grasses, or rocky cliffs. Other times it means using longer focal lengths to compress the landscape and emphasize the relationship between the bridge and the surrounding terrain.

Finding Better Framing in Big Sur
Most visitors photograph Bixby Bridge from the popular turnout just north of the bridge. While it's a classic perspective, it can become crowded quickly, especially during weekends, holidays, and the busy summer season.
Tip #1: Continue approximately half a mile north along Highway 1 and look for additional pullouts overlooking the coastline. The hero image featured in this article was captured from one of these elevated viewpoints, where the spring wildflowers, dramatic cliffs, and sweeping curves of the Big Sur coastline become part of the composition.
Tip #2: Don't focus solely on the bridge itself. Some of the strongest images use Bixby Bridge as a visual anchor within the larger landscape. The surrounding cliffs, Pacific Ocean, coastal fog, and rolling green hills often tell a more complete story of Big Sur.
Tip #3: If conditions allow, explore Coast Road, the historic route that climbs into the hills behind Bixby Bridge. Access conditions vary throughout the year, but when open, Coast Road provides spectacular elevated viewpoints overlooking Bixby Creek Canyon, the bridge, and miles of California coastline.
Bonus Tip: Fog is your friend. Many visitors leave when the marine layer rolls in, but some of my favorite photographs have been created when coastal fog drifted through the canyon, partially revealing the bridge while adding atmosphere, depth, and a sense of mystery to the landscape.
The broader Big Sur coastline is every bit as important as the bridge itself.
Nearby locations such as Garrapata State Park, Point Lobos, and the rocky shoreline north of Big Sur provide opportunities to place the bridge within the larger story of California's coastline.
One of my favorite perspectives includes natural rock formations in the foreground with Bixby Bridge visible in the distance beneath rolling fog. These compositions reveal not only the landmark itself but the landscape that makes it so memorable.
The bridge becomes part of a larger coastal narrative rather than the entire subject.
