🌷 2026 Season Update (April 19, 2026)
I just returned from shooting and scouting the tulip fields near Alkmaar and Lisse this weekend. Early warmth has pushed the mid-season tulips into spectacular full bloom, and the “Skies on Fire” storm conditions are creating incredible high-contrast light for photographers right now.
Some fields in the Lisse area are close to being headed, while the northern regions remain in peak bloom.

Every spring, the Netherlands tulip fields transform into one of the most visually extraordinary landscapes on earth—but in 2026, the season has arrived with unusual intensity. Across the tulip fields in the Netherlands, rows of crimson, pink, yellow, and violet stretch toward the horizon under dramatic “Skies on Fire” storm light—creating rare, high-contrast conditions photographers dream of.
In the Lisse area, some fields are already nearing the heading process, while farther north the landscapes remain at peak color. It’s a fleeting window—one where timing, light, and location come together to create some of the most powerful spring scenes you’ll ever experience.
For travelers, tulip fields in the Netherlands represent one of Europe's great seasonal pilgrimages. For photographers, they are something else entirely: a landscape that rewards patience, light, and intimacy in equal measure.
I've been photographing landscapes for more than 30 years, from Yosemite to the Hawaiian Islands. I’m now based in the Netherlands and return to these fields every spring. After living in the Netherlands for seven years, tulip season has become my favorite time to stand behind a camera. This guide shares everything I know about experiencing and photographing these remarkable fields.

I share what’s blooming now—and where to go before it’s gone.

When Tulips (and Hyacinths) Bloom

Tulip season officially spans late March through early May, but the Dutch spring landscape begins its transformation much earlier — and understanding the full arc of that calendar makes all the difference.
- Late March: Early tulip varieties appear alongside peak hyacinths. When the wind catches a field of purple hyacinths, the fragrance carries for miles. It is the unmistakable scent of a Dutch spring — and one most visitors miss entirely.
- Early April: The first major tulip fields come into color. A patchwork of reds, yellows, and pinks begins to emerge across the Bollenstreek.
- Mid-April (Peak): Usually the best window for full fields in all colors. Plan for roughly April 10–20 in a typical year, though exact timing shifts by a week or two depending on spring temperatures.
- Late April: Farmers begin heading — removing the flower tops so energy returns to the bulb underground. A perfect field today may be harvested within 24 hours.
- Early May: Most commercial fields are cleared. Later-variety tulips, alliums, and Keukenhof's garden beds continue blooming until the garden closes mid-May.
Many visitors searching for “tulip fields in the Netherlands” don’t realize that the surrounding hyacinth fields are just as spectacular—especially in late March and early April.
In my seven years here, I’ve found that while tulips win for color, hyacinths win for the sensory experience. They may be the best-smelling flowers on earth.
For granular real-time updates on blooming locations, I recommend the location guides by tulip photographers Nick de Jonge (Skeyes), Ewout Pahud and Marijn Alons, who provide excellent detailed boots-on-the-ground tulip field tracking every season. I just got back from an amazing workshop with Nick and Ewout that I participate in every year!
Where are the best tulip fields in the Netherlands?
Many visitors expect tulips to grow everywhere in the Netherlands. In reality, the largest concentrations are located in a few key regions.
Bollenstreek (The Flower Strip) tulip fields
The most famous tulip region, stretching between Haarlem and Leiden and centered on the town of Lisse. Quiet country roads and cycling paths run alongside countless fields, and most of the iconic tulip photographs you see online originate here.
One evening near Lisse, the sun broke through a passing storm just as the fields reached peak bloom. The sky turned orange, the rows glowed crimson, and the entire landscape felt like it was on fire. Moments like that are why I return every spring.

Noordoostpolder tulip field
Located about 90 minutes northeast of Amsterdam, the Noordoostpolder tulip fields form the largest continuous tulip-growing area in the Netherlands and host one of the country’s longest tulip driving and cycling routes.
The fields here are expansive and often quieter than the more famous Bollenstreek region near Lisse. Many travelers choose this area specifically for its wide-open landscapes, large farms, and the chance to experience the Dutch flower countryside away from the busiest tourist routes.
Because tulip field locations change each year due to crop rotation, visitors often rely on updated bloom maps or local scouting reports to find the most colorful fields.
Photographer Marijn Alons, whose tulip photography guides I mentioned earlier, tracks blooming tulip fields across the Noordoostpolder each season and provides helpful updates for travelers and photographers planning a visit.
Flevoland tulip fields

Because this province sits on reclaimed land, the fields stretch across extremely flat landscapes.
For photographers like myself, that means perfectly graphic rows of color reaching to the horizon.
I had a great time just driving around looking at all the different colors and fields around! I highly recommend this!
Flevoland is one of the largest bulb-growing regions in the Netherlands, known for its enormous tulip fields that stretch across reclaimed polder landscapes.

📍 The Magic of the North Holland Polders: The Schermerhorn & Obdam "Quiet Route"
While the world-famous Bollenstreek near Lisse is a must-see, my personal favorite area for fine art photography is the rugged, expansive landscape of North Holland. This region offers those vast, quiet horizons that look so much better in a large-scale print.
Driving between these villages is a completely different experience. The fields here are often larger and set against the backdrop of historic 17th-century pumping mills, in this case the Schermerhorn Windmills.
The Obdammermolen at Dawn
If you are willing to make the early morning trip from the city, the North Holland polders reward you with an ethereal atmosphere that is purely magical.

- Schermerhorn (The Windmill Backdrop): This is one of the most prestigious spots for photography. The Museummolen Schermerhorn is surrounded by polders that often fill with vibrant tulips. It’s the perfect place to use your Nikon D850 for those 1:1 symmetry shots of a windmill reflecting in a canal next to a field of red tulips.
- Obdam & Hensbroek: Just a 10-minute drive from Schermerhorn, the area around Obdam is a "hidden" hub for bulb growers. The roads here are narrow and quiet, allowing you to safely pull over (where permitted) for those low-angle shots. The leading lines created by the drainage canals and the tulip rows here are exceptional.
- The "Tulip Highway" (A7): As you move from Obdam toward Hoorn, you’ll hit what locals call the "Tulip Highway." In mid-April, the fields on both sides of the A7 are so bright they almost glow.
- Fields off the A9 near Alkmaar: "The Kennemerland Bulb Region"
The area just south and west of Alkmaar (between Castricum, Egmond, and Alkmaar) is historically known as the Kennemerland Bulb Region.

Fields near Sint Maarten: "The Kop van Noord-Holland"
Sint Maarten (and nearby Sint Maartensbrug/Sint Maartensvlotbrug) is part of the Kop van Noord-Holland (the "Head of North Holland"). This is the largest continuous bulb-growing area in the world.

Pro Tip: The Moving Tulip Fields!
One of the most important things to understand about Dutch flower farming is that tulip field locations change every few years. Farmers rotate their crops to prevent soil exhaustion and manage pests. Just because a tulip field was in a specific location last year doesn't mean it will be there again! This is why "static" maps from old blog posts are often useless. For the most accurate, real-time 2026 locations, I always defer to the updated scouting reports from local experts like Nick Skeyes and Marijn Alons.
Keukenhof Gardens: The Most Beautiful Spring Tulip and Flower Garden in the World

👉 “This is where spring in the Netherlands feels almost unreal—millions of tulips, quiet canals, and moments of color that only last a few weeks each year.”
👉 “Why visit Keukenhof?” With more than 7 million bulbs, Keukenhof is one of the most famous spring gardens in the world.
Unlike agricultural fields, Keukenhof is a curated landscape filled with winding paths, ponds, and layered flower beds.

🌷 Windmills + Tulips: A Quintessential Dutch Combination

Some of the most iconic landscapes in the Netherlands pair tulip fields with historic windmills — both defining elements of the same flat, open countryside. The area around Zaanse Schans and the rural North Holland polder landscape are particularly striking in spring, when tulip color meets working windmill sails against a dramatic Dutch sky.
Over 1,000 windmills still stand across the country, and many sit alongside flower fields during peak season. The combination of vivid rows and turning sails is one of the defining images of a Netherlands spring — and one of the most rewarding compositions to photograph.
Where to Shoot Among the Tulips: 2026 Photography Patches
As a professional, I’m often asked: "Where can I actually walk into the rows?" In commercial agricultural fields, the answer is simple: You can't. To protect the bulbs from disease and trampling, farmers strictly forbid entry.
However, several tulip and flower locations in 2026 are designed specifically for photographers and flower lovers to get that "immersed" look safely and legally:
- Tulip Experience Amsterdam (Noordwijkerhout): This is one of the most complete experiences in the region. It features a massive show garden with over 4 million tulips and dedicated photo points designed for the perfect angle.
- Address: Delfweg 37, 2211 VK Noordwijkerhout
- Official Site: tulipexperienceamsterdam.com
- The Tulip Barn (Hillegom): A true "photography playground" with 2.5 million tulips and creative props like vintage tractors, swings, and even a piano.
- Address: 3e Loosterweg 130, 2182 CX Hillegom
- Official Site: thetulipbarn.com
- S. Pennings & ZN (Noordwijkerhout): I captured my "Skies on Fire" panorama here. They offer a beautiful picking garden (Pluktuin) where you can walk among the blooms and purchase fresh flowers directly from the barn.
- Address: Oosterduinen 40, 2211 ZB Noordwijkerhout
- Official Site: spennings.com
- FAM Flower Farm (Lisse): For a more exclusive "boutique" feel, they offer private visits to their fields by reservation only. Their pink bike is a favorite for fine art portraits.

Tulip Photography Tips & Gear
Tulip fields naturally create powerful compositions. The challenge isn't finding a strong image — it's making one that goes beyond the obvious postcard.
- Compression: Use a telephoto lens (70–200mm) to stack layers of color into a dense, graphic pattern. This works beautifully from the roadside without entering the field.
- Leading lines: The rows guide the viewer's eye through the frame. Position yourself at a slight angle to the rows rather than straight down the middle for more dynamic movement.
- Light: Sunrise and sunset are the moments. Low angle light catches the translucency of the petals and turns waxy leaves into emerald light-catchers. Storm light, when you can find it, is extraordinary.
- The spray bottle trick: Carry a small spray bottle. Adding water droplets to tulip petals creates tiny jewel-like reflections in early morning light — what I call the "liquid jewel" effect.
- My current photography tulip kit: Nikon D850 using on a Gitzo tripod, my iPhone 17 Pro Max (Cosmic Orange of course living in The Netherlands!), and my DJI Mini 5 Pro. My favorite lenses are the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 and Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 and my go to default lens is the Nikon 24-70mm f 2.8. All my gear is transported in my f-stop Tilopa camera backpack. A polarizer is essential for controlling reflections on waxy tulip leaves and deepening the blue in dramatic spring skies.
- DJI Mini 5 Pro Fly More Combo with DJI RC 2. Note - please make sure you understand the Netherlands safe flying and licensing before flying your drones! There are MANY no fly zones around the tulips fields and Schiphol airport.
Some of my favorite tulip photographs — including "Skies on Fire at Sunset over Dutch Tulips" — are available as large-format fine art prints for homes, offices, and healthcare environments.

Why Are Farmers Cutting the Tulips down?
One of the most common questions travelers ask is:
"Why are they cutting the flowers down?"
Most Dutch tulips are grown for bulbs, not the flowers themselves. The worst experience ever was showing up to show my Mother who was visiting all these amazing tulip fields right as they were cutting them down! Timing is everything,
Once the bloom reaches peak color, farmers remove the flower head so the plant directs its energy back into strengthening the bulb underground.
This process is called heading (koppen in Dutch).

Watching the Pink Innovation tulip cutter move through the fields is almost mesmerizing. The machine glides across the rows, collecting the blooms in a carefully choreographed mechanical dance.
For photographers, it’s a reminder that the tulip landscape is fleeting.
A perfect field today may be harvested tomorrow.
Tulip Field Etiquette (Please Read)
Tulip fields are working farms.
Respecting them is essential.
Important guidelines:
• Never walk into commercial tulip fields
• Do not step between rows
• Stay on roads or designated paths
• Support farms that allow visitors
Even a few footsteps can damage bulbs beneath the soil.
Can You Buy Dutch Tulip Bulbs?
Many visitors want to bring tulip bulbs home.
However, import restrictions vary by country, and travelers should always check regulations before purchasing.
United States Import Rules
Travelers entering the United States must follow USDA regulations, which typically require:
• bulbs free of soil
• phytosanitary inspection certification
• proper packaging
Some airport shops in the Netherlands sell pre-approved bulbs specifically packaged for export.
These bulbs are generally allowed into the United States when sealed and properly labeled.
However, regulations can change, so always verify the rules with U.S. Customs and Border Protection before traveling.
Alternatively, many reputable Dutch companies ship bulbs internationally in the fall planting season.
Essential 2026 Tulip Travel Tips
Amsterdam to Keukenhof: Metro M52 to Europaplein (RAI), then Keukenhof Express Bus 852. Approximately 35 minutes. Runs throughout the garden's season from late March through mid-May.
Exploring the Bollenstreek: Rent a bicycle in Haarlem or Leiden for the most authentic experience — the flat landscape and cycling infrastructure were designed for exactly this. Car hire also works well for reaching the quieter fields of Noordoostpolder or Flevoland.
Where to stay: Base yourself in Haarlem. Twenty minutes by train from Amsterdam, positioned perfectly for early-morning Bollenstreek access, and significantly quieter than the city during peak tulip season.
King's Day — April 27: Everything shuts down and is almost impossible to get around! Plan all field photography before or after this date. But if you're in the Netherlands: stay for it. One of the world's great street festivals.
Tulips as Fine Art
Some of my favorite tulip photographs happen during quiet moments—sunset light catching the rows, or morning mist drifting across the fields.
Scenes like these translate beautifully into large-scale fine art photography, bringing a sense of calm and natural rhythm into interior spaces.
My tulip photographs are collected for homes, offices, and healthcare environments around the world.

Final Thought
Tulip season in the Netherlands is brief, beautiful, and constantly changing.
That fleeting nature is exactly what makes it so compelling to photograph.
Every spring brings new colors, new fields, and new moments where light and landscape align perfectly.
And for a few short weeks each year, the Dutch countryside becomes one of the most extraordinary places to stand behind a camera.
Your Questions about Tulips Answered
What month are tulips in the Netherlands?
Tulips bloom from late March through early May, with peak color typically in mid-April. Exact timing shifts by one to two weeks each year depending on spring temperatures.
When to see tulips in the Netherlands in 2026?
Plan your visit between April 10 and April 20 for the highest probability of peak fields. For real-time updates, follow Nick de Jonge (Skeyes), Ewout Pahud, and Marijn Alons — they track conditions on the ground every season.
Is it better to visit tulip fields or Keukenhof?
They offer genuinely different experiences. Open commercial fields in the Bollenstreek are raw, vast, and graphic — especially extraordinary at sunrise or under storm light. Keukenhof is a curated garden with 7 million bulbs, winding paths, and artistic variety plantings. Ideally, visit both.
How much do Keukenhof tickets cost in 2026?
€21.50 per adult, booked online in advance. No walk-in entry. Popular mid-April weekend dates sell out early — book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Which Dutch town is most famous for tulip fields?
Lisse sits at the heart of the Bollenstreek and is home to Keukenhof. The surrounding villages of Hillegom, Noordwijkerhout, and Sassenheim are equally surrounded by fields and quieter for early-morning photography.
Can you walk to tulip fields from Keukenhof?
Some commercial fields are visible adjacent to Keukenhof, but walking into them is strictly prohibited. For the standing-inside-the-tulips experience, visit the Tulip Barn in Hillegom — it plants 2.5 million tulips specifically for visitors with designated paths.
How do I get from Amsterdam to Keukenhof?
Take Metro M52 to Europaplein (RAI Amsterdam), then board the Keukenhof Express Bus 852. Journey time is approximately 35 minutes. Buses run from late March through mid-May.
What about King's Day?
King's Day (April 27) is the Netherlands' largest national celebration — over two million people flood city centers dressed in orange, and public transport becomes very difficult. Plan all tulip field photography before King's Day weekend. The cities are wonderful that day; the roads are not.
Where can I buy tulip bulbs from the Netherlands online?
Dutch bulb companies ship internationally in the fall planting season (September–November). Look for certified exporters with phytosanitary documentation, and verify USDA import rules if you're in the US. Schiphol Airport shops also carry export-approved bulbs year-round.
